A .WTML file is a WorldWide Telescope Data File used to store astronomical collections, folders, and guided tours. Managed by the American Astronomical Society, the WorldWide Telescope software uses this XML-based format to link to massive, remote datasets of the night sky, planets, and galaxies.
The primary disadvantage of the .WTML format is its absolute dependence on external servers and specific software. It is a highly specialized, domain-specific text file. Standard media players, web browsers, and document viewers cannot interpret the spatial data or render the guided tours. Furthermore, because a .WTML file only contains textual references and metadata, it lacks the actual image or video data, making offline use highly restricted.
To extract the underlying data, the best target formats are standard text structures like XML, JSON, or TXT. Converting to these formats allows developers and researchers to parse coordinates, camera paths, and image URLs easily. Converting a .WTML file directly into a video file like MP4 or a raster image like JPG using standard online converters is impossible because the file does not contain visual pixels.
This format is notoriously difficult to process outside of its native environment because only the original software can properly read the astronomical spatial references and pull the necessary tiles from remote servers.
