About WPO files

The .WPO format stores GPS waypoint data, originally generated by HOLUX GPS navigation devices or the legacy Technopress Waypoint 2D software. These files contain navigation routes, latitudes, longitudes, dates, and point-of-interest details. Historically, they were managed by bundled software like Holux MapShow or Technopress, but today, GPSBabel is the standard tool used to parse them.

Working with .WPO files today is highly impractical. The format is tied to obsolete, proprietary hardware and is not supported by modern web browsers, current smartphone apps, or contemporary mapping platforms like Google Earth. Without specific legacy software installed, the file is essentially a dead end.

To make this data usable, converting .WPO to GPX (GPS Exchange Format) or KML (Keyhole Markup Language) is the best solution. These target formats allow you to import your old routes directly into Google Maps, Garmin devices, or modern GIS applications. Alternatively, converting to CSV extracts the raw coordinates into a spreadsheet. Note that while core coordinates and routes are preserved during conversion, device-specific metadata like Holux use counts may be discarded.

Because .WPO is an obsolete, closed format - sometimes existing as a raw binary log and other times as an XML structure - it is notoriously difficult to open or convert without the original software. If our analysis detects a supported embedded structure, viewing the coordinates or converting the file to a standard GPS format may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your WPO file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The WPO Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our WPO converter.
