A .WJE file is a proprietary journal entry generated by WinJournal, a legacy personal journaling application developed by Mariner Software. These files store individual diary or journal entries, typically containing rich text, metadata such as timestamps and tags, and potentially embedded media or custom formatting.
Because .WJE is a proprietary, closed-source format, it locks your personal data into a single application ecosystem. If you do not have an active, licensed copy of WinJournal running on a compatible Windows operating system, these files are largely inaccessible. Opening them in standard text editors like Notepad usually results in garbled text due to proprietary binary wrappers and rich-text encoding.
To ensure long-term access to your journal entries, it is highly recommended to convert .WJE files into universal formats like TXT, RTF, or PDF. Doing so preserves the text but may strip out WinJournal-specific metadata like mood tracking or internal tags.
