The .WFA extension is an ambiguous container used by three distinct legacy ecosystems, making it a frequent source of frustration for users trying to recover data. Most commonly encountered by general users as a WinFax PRO Archive, this format was the native storage for Symantec WinFax PRO (originally developed by Delrina). These files function as compressed proprietary backups containing fax images, logs, and metadata. Since Symantec discontinued the software years ago, accessing these faxes on modern Windows 10/11 systems is nearly impossible without virtualization or specialized conversion tools. Users typically need to convert these to PDF or TIFF for archiving.
Simultaneously, the extension serves as a Game Asset Archive for titles developed by Wildfire Studios or using the WildTangent engine. In this context, the file acts as a proprietary "blob" storing textures, sounds, and level data, specifically designed to prevent user modification. Finally, in enterprise environments, .WFA files often contain EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) data formatted to UN/EDIFACT or ANSI X12 standards.
