About WARPGRID files

The .warpgrid file is a proprietary configuration file used exclusively by the Grid Warp plugin for Paint.NET, developed by pyrochild. It stores the coordinate data, vertex mesh configurations, and control points used to distort or warp a raster image. Users rely on this file to save complex distortion grids so they can be re-applied to different image layers or edited later.

The main disadvantage of the .warpgrid format is its severe vendor lock-in. It is highly proprietary and fundamentally useless outside of the specific Grid Warp plugin. It does not contain any visual pixel data. Standard image editors like Adobe Photoshop or GIMP cannot open or import this file. Sharing this file with a colleague means they must also run Windows, install Paint.NET, and manually install the exact third-party plugin.

Because this is a closed, proprietary plugin format containing mathematical coordinates rather than images, standard online converters will fail to process it. Only the original software can properly read or export the grid data onto an image. True conversion targets are limited, but extracting the raw numeric data to TXT, JSON, or XML might be useful for developers attempting to map the grid into another 3D or 2D software. We can inspect the file and display its internal text or embedded structure, making it easier to salvage your coordinate data.

Convert.Guru analyzes your WARPGRID file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The WARPGRID Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our WARPGRID converter.
