About VSMETA files
The .vsmeta file is a proprietary metadata format generated by Synology Video Station. It stores essential information for video files hosted on a Synology NAS (Network Attached Storage), including movie titles, episode summaries, cast lists, directors, release dates, and file paths to poster images. Video Station automatically creates these sidecar files alongside standard media files (such as MP4, MKV, or AVI) to build a rich, graphical user interface for media browsing.
However, the .vsmeta format introduces a significant vendor lock-in problem. It is proprietary and designed exclusively to operate within the Synology ecosystem. If you decide to migrate your media library to industry-standard home theater software like Plex, Jellyfin, or Kodi, these programs will ignore .vsmeta files. Consequently, all your carefully curated custom metadata will be lost, and your new media server will be forced to re-scrape the internet for movie details. Furthermore, if you stop using Video Station, these files become orphaned clutter inside your media directories.
To preserve your custom media tags, the best conversion target is the NFO format, which is universally recognized by Kodi, Plex, and Emby. Converting to JSON or XML is also highly recommended if you intend to parse the data programmatically using custom media management scripts.
Because .vsmeta is a closed, proprietary format, standard online converters fail to process it. Usually, only Synology tools can properly read or export this data natively. Our platform analyzes the internal structure of the .vsmeta file.
Convert.Guru analyzes your VSMETA file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
