About VMIX files
The .VMIX file is a preset configuration file used primarily for managing live video production, streaming, and switching. It is created and opened exclusively by vMix, a professional live production software suite developed by StudioCoast. Users often attempt to convert this file expecting playable video output, but this highlights the main disadvantage of the format: the .VMIX format is proprietary and only contains XML-based text data. It stores file paths, stream keys, virtual sets, and audio routing, but it does not store actual video or audio media. Consequently, if you transfer a .VMIX file without the associated media files, the project breaks. It requires a paid license and a Windows PC to open properly, and it is completely unsupported by standard non-linear video editors like Adobe Premiere Pro. The most practical conversion targets are XML or TXT. Converting to these text formats allows you to extract scene layouts, media file paths, and configuration values even if you do not have the original software installed. Migrating this data to alternative broadcasting software like OBS Studio requires manual copy-pasting of these values. This file format is difficult to open or convert into traditional media formats because it is a closed, proprietary instruction set rather than a media container. Standard online video converters fail to process it because they look for media streams, not configuration code. Often, only the original vMix software can properly read the project data or export the actual video recording. Because our analysis detects the supported underlying XML structure embedded within the file, viewing the raw data or extracting the text is still easily possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your VMIX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The VMIX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VMIX converter.
