A .VDW file is a legacy Visio Web Drawing created by Microsoft. Introduced with Visio 2010, this format allowed users to display complex vector diagrams, flowcharts, and organizational charts directly in web browsers via Microsoft SharePoint, even if the end user did not have Microsoft Visio installed on their machine.
Today, the .VDW format is severely outdated and highly proprietary. It binds your data strictly to the older Microsoft SharePoint ecosystem. Files often fail to open on modern systems without legacy software configurations or a costly Microsoft 365 subscription. Furthermore, standard web browsers no longer support the legacy components required to render these files interactively.
You must convert .VDW files to modern formats for long-term access and archiving. We recommend converting to VSDX to retain full vector editing capabilities in modern Visio versions. If you only need to share the diagram visually with external clients, converting to PDF or PNG is the most practical choice, although you will lose the ability to edit individual vector shapes or access the data fields linked to the diagram.
