About UVM files

A .UVM file is a compiled bytecode executable created for the Unit Virtual Machine (uVM). It functions as the underlying operating logic for microcontrollers in smart home devices, most notably the Mostat Wi-Fi thermostat developed by Alien Green. These files present severe usability challenges for the average user. Because they contain low-level machine code built exclusively for specialized hardware, they are impossible to open natively on Windows or Mac. The format is highly proprietary, undocumented, and closed. When users try to open a .UVM file in standard desktop applications, it results in unreadable binary garbage. You cannot meaningfully convert this embedded firmware into consumer formats like DOCX or PDF, and standard online converters will fail to process it entirely because it is not a media or document file. While full conversion into consumer formats is impossible, our analysis engine can still safely inspect the internal content and show you what is inside.

Convert.Guru analyzes your UVM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The UVM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our UVM converter.
