To convert other file formats to the "Legacy Bitmap Image" file type, you need software like ImageMagick or a similar tool.
About URT files
The .URT file format is a legacy raster image format associated with the Utah Raster Toolkit. It stores bitmap images using Run-Length Encoding (RLE) compression. Developed in the 1980s by researchers at the University of Utah and University of Michigan, it was standard in academic and early UNIX environments for rendering and image processing.
You can open and convert .URT files using command-line tools like ImageMagick or the Netpbm suite. Some legacy image viewers like XnView also support it. You can read more about its history on Wikipedia.
The .URT format is entirely obsolete. Modern operating systems, mobile devices, and web browsers do not support it natively. Sharing a .URT file guarantees the recipient will not be able to open it without specialized or legacy software. Furthermore, its basic RLE compression is inefficient compared to modern algorithms, meaning files take up unnecessary disk space.
For web use and modern sharing, convert .URT to PNG to retain lossless quality. For photographs or sharing over email, convert to JPG. For professional editing or archiving, convert to TIFF. Drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.

The URT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our URT converter.
