About UDI files
The .UDI file format is an Ultra Disk Image used almost exclusively by ZX Spectrum emulators. These files store a low-level, exact replica of a physical floppy disk, including raw magnetic flux data, track structures, and sector timings. This level of detail was historically necessary to preserve copy-protected retro games and software that relied on non-standard disk formatting.
To open a .UDI file natively, users typically need specialized retro emulators like Unreal Speccy or disk utilities designed for the TR-DOS operating system.
The primary disadvantage of the .UDI format is its extreme obscurity and proprietary binary structure. You cannot mount a .UDI file using standard operating systems like Windows or macOS, and modern archiving tools like 7-Zip cannot extract its contents. Standard online converters fail to process these files because they cannot parse the 1980s-era track layouts and sector headers. Users typically need to convert these files to simpler, more widely supported emulator formats like TRD or SCL.
Because of its raw data structure, this file format is difficult to open or convert using generic tools. Emphasize that often only the original emulator software can properly read or export the embedded game data. However, just drag and drop your file into convert.guru to identify the format, inspect the file, and show text or internal hex content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your UDI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The UDI Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our UDI converter.
