Extract text from TSM files

Most .TSM files are Time Structured Merge tree files generated by InfluxDB, a leading open-source time-series database. These files act as the storage engine's raw data shards - highly compressed, read-only binary blocks optimized for write throughput rather than human access. A common frustration for engineers and administrators is that .TSM files are essentially "black boxes"; they cannot be opened in text editors or standard viewers without the database engine running. You cannot simply double-click them to see your metrics or logs. To analyze this data in tools like Microsoft Excel or for migration purposes, you typically need to export or convert these shards into CSV (Comma Separated Values) or JSON.
A secondary but significant format is the TwinCAT System Manager file used by Beckhoff for industrial automation. These files store hardware configuration and variable mappings for PLC systems. While they sometimes use structured storage similar to OLE compounds, they require the specific TwinCAT environment to interpret correctly. Legacy uses also include TINA SPICE macro models and digital tachograph archives. For database extraction, the best target format is CSV; for configuration archiving, converting to XML or printing to PDF is recommended.
