About TPU files

The .TPU file extension stands as a relic of the DOS era, primarily serving as a Turbo Pascal Unit. Generated by the legendary Turbo Pascal environment by Borland, these files are compiled binaries containing interface code, variables, and procedures. They were designed to speed up linking by storing pre-compiled chunks of a program.

The core problem with .TPU files is their rigid proprietary nature and version fragility. A unit compiled in Turbo Pascal 5.0 is essentially useless in version 5.5 or 6.0 due to changes in the internal binary format. Furthermore, because they are binary blobs, opening them in a standard text editor displays illegible character soup. Users typically encounter these files when trying to resurrect legacy codebases where the original PAS source code has been lost, leaving them locked out of the logic inside the unit.

A significant minority of .TPU files are actually Teleport Pro URL Lists created by the web spider software Teleport Pro. In this context, the file serves as a database of crawled links.
