About SUMO files

The .sumo file is a proprietary raster image project format used exclusively by Sumo Paint, a browser-based graphic design application created by Snap Group. These files act as full project containers. They store multiple image layers, vector paths, layer masks, opacity settings, and filter effects within a compressed archive structure. Unlike flat image formats, the .SUMO extension allows digital artists to save their work-in-progress on the web and resume editing later without losing layer data. It functions similarly to Adobe's PSD (Adobe Photoshop) or GIMP's XCF (GIMP). However, the .SUMO format has major disadvantages. Because it is a closed, proprietary ecosystem format, you cannot natively open these files in standard desktop image viewers, mobile galleries, or even other professional design software. If someone sends you a .SUMO file, you are forced to use the Sumo Paint web app to view the image. This makes offline viewing, long-term archiving, and quick sharing highly impractical. To make the file usable, you must convert it. The most practical conversion targets are PNG to preserve background transparency, or JPG for maximum compatibility and minimal file size. Note that converting a .SUMO file to standard web formats will flatten the image, permanently merging all individual layers into one static graphic. This file format is notoriously difficult to process. Standard online converters routinely fail because they lack the specific decoding libraries required to parse Sumo Paint's proprietary layer definitions. If our analysis extracts a supported embedded format or thumbnail, viewing and conversion become instant.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SUMO file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The SUMO Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SUMO converter.
