About SUL files

The .SUL file format primarily functions as a modern User Library for Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), alongside an obscure history as an obsolete GFA RayTrace 3D image. In industrial automation, platforms like Mitsubishi GX Works2 and Panasonic Control FPWIN Pro use .SUL files to store custom, reusable Function Blocks (FBs). These highly specialized files allow engineers to package complex, repetitive logic and easily insert them into new factory automation projects.

However, opening or converting modern .SUL libraries is notoriously difficult. The format is heavily proprietary, closed, and compiled specifically for exact PLC architectures (such as Q-series or FX-series CPUs). If your target hardware does not match, the software will simply refuse to load the logic. Furthermore, automation developers routinely lock these libraries with strict, encrypted passwords to protect their intellectual property. You cannot natively edit the code or translate it into an open language without importing it back into the original IDE. Standard online converters fail completely because the data consists of hardware-specific binary instructions, not standard text. To extract this data, users must authenticate within the native software and export the logic as an ASC or CSV file.

Historically, the .SUL extension was also assigned to uncompressed 3D render images generated by GFA RayTrace for the 1980s Atari ST. These legacy graphics are entirely unsupported by modern operating systems or web browsers.

Whether you are dealing with an industrial automation library or a 30-year-old Atari render, convert.guru is the pragmatic first step. Just drag and drop your file to see what it is and convert it if supported. Our deep file inspection will identify the precise binary signature, differentiate between a legacy image and an encrypted PLC library, and display any accessible internal metadata to help you determine your exact next steps.

The SUL Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SUL converter.
