About SMPF files

A .SMPF file is a Sprite Monkey Project file, developed by PoseMotion for their Sprite Monkey application on macOS. These files are used by 2D game developers to store individual sprite images, grid layouts, animation sequences, and coordinate data in a single workspace to generate texture atlases. The main disadvantage of the .SMPF format is that it is a closed, proprietary file tied to a discontinued piece of macOS software. It is not a standard image. Because it acts as a compressed container of assets and settings rather than a flat graphic, it cannot be opened by standard image editors or web browsers. To use your sprites in a modern game engine, the best conversion targets are PNG for the assembled sprite sheet, or a ZIP archive to extract the raw frames. Standard online converters fail to process .SMPF files because they lack the specific parsing logic to reassemble the project data. This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert, and often only the original software can properly read the layout or export the final atlas data. However, there is a realistic workaround. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SMPF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The SMPF Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SMPF converter.
