About SIV files
The .SIV file is a proprietary raw video container created specifically for Silicon Imaging digital cinema cameras, such as the SI-2K. It stores uncompressed, 12-bit raw sensor data directly from the camera. This format is primarily used in high-end digital film production where maximum image fidelity is required before color grading and post-production. Historically, professional colorists relied on specialized software like Adobe SpeedGrade (originally IRIDAS FrameCycler) to open and debayer these files. However, the .SIV format presents significant challenges for modern workflows. Because it is completely uncompressed raw data, the files are incredibly massive, often consuming hundreds of gigabytes for a single shoot. Furthermore, because it is a closed proprietary format, it is completely unsupported by standard web browsers, basic media players, and even modern non-linear editing systems without legacy plugins. Adobe SpeedGrade itself has been discontinued, leaving many users stuck with files they cannot open. To make these files usable, you must convert them. For professional post-production, converting the video into an image sequence of DNG (Digital Negative) or DPX files is the industry standard, ensuring no loss of dynamic range. If you simply need to review the footage or share it with a client, converting it to an MP4 or MOV format is highly recommended. Standard online video converters almost always fail to process .SIV files because they lack the complex debayering algorithms needed to translate raw sensor data into visible RGB pixels. They simply see an unrecognized binary blob. Even if the raw sensor data is heavily proprietary, our analysis engine will inspect the file and show you what can be recovered.
