About SITES files

A .sites file serves two entirely different purposes. Most commonly, it is a Java Exception Site List used by the Java Runtime Environment to store trusted URLs that bypass security blocks. Alternatively, it is an iWeb Website Design Project, an obsolete package format created by Apple. The Java version is a simple text list, but the Apple iWeb version presents severe disadvantages. It is a proprietary, closed macOS package format. Because Apple abandoned iWeb in 2011, these files are effectively dead. They trap your website design, images, and text inside an inaccessible structure that modern web browsers and Windows computers cannot open natively. Converting a .sites file depends on its type. Java lists easily convert to .TXT or .CSV for bulk editing. For iWeb projects, the best target formats are .HTML, .JPG, and .PNG. Extracting these files means losing the original iWeb template structure, but you will recover your raw media and text. This file format is difficult to open or convert because an iWeb .sites file is actually a hidden folder rather than a standard file. Standard online converters fail to process it. Often only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SITES file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
