About SAD files
The .SAD extension creates confusion because it serves two completely different worlds: vintage gaming and international logistics.
Most commonly, a .SAD file is a Sound Archive Data file used in video games like Professor Layton on the Nintendo DS or the classic god-game Black & White by Lionhead Studios. These are proprietary containers holding music, voiceovers, and sound effects. The problem for gamers and modders is that standard media players like VLC Media Player cannot play them directly. They are often encoded with obscure codecs (like ADPCM) or packed into a bank format that requires extraction before playback. To listen to the soundtrack or use the assets, you need to convert these archives to accessible audio formats like WAV or MP3.
Alternatively, in a business context, a .SAD file represents a Single Administrative Document. This is a data file used by UNCTAD's ASYCUDA system and WinSAD software for customs declarations in the EU and other regions. These files contain critical trade data but are useless without the specific customs software that generated them. Traders often struggle to view the contents without expensive licenses. For this use case, the goal is usually converting the raw data into a human-readable PDF form for printing or an XML file for importing into modern ERP systems.
Convert.Guru analyzes your SAD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The SAD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SAD converter.
