About RZX files

The .RZX file format is primarily known as a ZX Spectrum Input Recording, designed to store a sequence of input events (keystrokes and joystick movements) rather than video frames. Developed for the libspectrum library, these files allow emulators like Fuse and Spectaculator to replay gameplay with perfect deterministic accuracy.

The frustrating part for users is that .RZX files are not video files. You cannot open them in standard media players like VLC or Windows Media Player. Because the file only contains input data, playback relies entirely on the emulation engine replicating the exact conditions of the original recording session. This creates a dependency on specific emulator versions and ROM files; if the emulation timing drifts, the recording will "desync," causing the playback to diverge from the intended gameplay.

To share these recordings on platforms like YouTube, you must convert them to standard video formats. The most reliable workflow involves loading the .RZX into an emulator and using its internal "Export to Video" or "Record AVI" feature to render the output to MP4 or AVI. For archiving or sharing within the retro-gaming community, keeping the original .RZX is preferred due to its incredibly small file size (often just a few kilobytes) compared to gigabytes of video data.

Convert.Guru analyzes your RZX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
