A .RYK file is a data file that has been maliciously encrypted by the Ryuk ransomware. When this malware infects a system, it targets standard user files - such as DOCX, XLSX, and JPG - encrypts their contents using robust RSA and AES cryptographic algorithms, and appends the .RYK extension to the filename.
The primary disadvantage of this format is that the data is completely mathematically locked and held hostage. You cannot simply open a .RYK file using standard office software or image viewers, as the original file structure has been scrambled and replaced with unreadable ciphertext. It requires a unique private decryption key, typically held by the attackers, to be unlocked via a specialized software decryptor.
Standard online converters fail completely when processing .RYK files because they look for readable file headers and structural data that no longer exist. You cannot convert a .RYK file back to its original format without decrypting it first.
