About RUF files
The .RUF file extension is primarily associated with Firmware Update Files for consumer electronics, most notably Samsung Blu-ray players, DVD systems, and older TVs, as well as Philips and Humax set-top boxes. These files contain low-level binary code required to patch the device's operating system, fix bugs, or add new features.
The biggest obstacle users encounter is attempting to "open" a .RUF file on a Windows or macOS computer immediately after downloading it. Because these are proprietary binary containers specific to the device's hardware architecture, standard desktop software cannot read or execute them. Double-clicking typically results in an "Unknown file type" error or a prompt to search the web for a compatible program. Furthermore, these files are strictly version-sensitive; applying a .RUF intended for one model (e.g., a Samsung BD-E5500) to a different unit can permanently "brick" the device.
For most users, "conversion" is not the goal - installation is. The intended workflow involves copying the .RUF file to the root directory of a FAT32-formatted USB drive and inserting it into the target device's USB service port. However, for developers or security researchers analyzing firmware, these files can sometimes be treated as archives. In rare cases, the file is simply a renamed ZIP or generic binary that can be inspected using hex editors or extraction tools like 7-Zip to view the internal file structure, though this serves no purpose for general media playback.
Convert.Guru analyzes your RUF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted EXE, VY4, SNB and SPB files.
The RUF Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RUF converter.
