About RGRP files

The .RGRP file is a Pro Tools Region Group created by Avid Pro Tools. It stores metadata that links multiple audio, MIDI, or video clips together on a digital timeline. This allows audio engineers to arrange complex multi-track elements, like a layered drum beat or a choir stack, as a single editable block.

This format is heavily restrictive and carries severe disadvantages for collaboration. It is entirely proprietary to Avid and contains absolutely zero actual audio or MIDI data. Instead, it relies on file paths pointing to the source media on your local hard drive. If you share an .RGRP file without the accompanying audio folder, the recipient will only see offline, missing media. Furthermore, competing Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) like Logic Pro or Ableton Live cannot natively read or import this proprietary file.

Standard online converters fail to process .RGRP files because they lack the required Pro Tools engine to interpret the session logic and reconstruct the audio timeline. To actually migrate this data to another DAW, you must open the session in Pro Tools and bounce the tracks into universal formats like WAV or MIDI, or export the timeline as an AAF or OMF file.

This file format is difficult to open or convert because only the original software can properly read or export the timeline data.

Convert.Guru analyzes your RGRP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
