The .R2U file is a maliciously encrypted file created by a ransomware infection. Ransomware attacks target computers and forcefully encrypt personal and business files - such as documents, images, and databases - appending the .r2u extension to the original filename. Typical use cases for this format are strictly malicious, designed by cybercriminals to hold user data hostage until a ransom is paid.
Because these files are locked with complex cryptographic algorithms (usually AES or RSA), standard software cannot open them. To recover the data, users typically need specialized decryption utilities provided by security organizations like No More Ransom or antivirus vendors like Kaspersky.
