To convert PVMP virtual machines to another format, you need Parallels Desktop or other Backup software.
Convert a file to PVMP
To convert other file formats to the "Packed Virtual Machine" file type, you need software like Parallels Desktop or a similar tool.
About PVMP files
A .PVMP file is a Parallels Packed Virtual Machine file used by Parallels Desktop. It acts as a single-file archive containing an entire virtual operating system, including the virtual hard drive, system snapshots, and configuration settings. Users rely on this format to easily back up or transfer their Windows or Linux virtual environments between Mac computers.
To open a .PVMP file, you must use Parallels Desktop on macOS. This presents significant disadvantages: it is a highly proprietary format that requires an expensive subscription to open. The files are exceptionally large, often exceeding tens or hundreds of gigabytes, making them completely unsupported by web browsers or mobile devices.
Users typically want to convert .PVMP files to universal virtual machine standards like OVA or OVF, or extract the raw disk image into VMDK or VHD for use in other hypervisors. However, this file format is inherently difficult to open or convert externally. Standard online converters fail to process it because of the massive file size limitations and the undocumented, closed structure.
Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your PVMP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The PVMP Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PVMP converter.
