About PSF1 files

A .PSF1 file is an emulated music file used to store audio ripped directly from PlayStation 1 video games. It contains both the instrument audio samples (like synths or percussion) and the sequencing instructions required to play them back in real-time, functioning much like an advanced MIDI file combined with a SoundFont. Game preservationists use these files to listen to original game music exactly as it was rendered on the PS1 hardware. You can play these files on a computer using Audio Overload or by installing Winamp with the Highly Experimental plugin. The primary disadvantage of the .PSF1 format is its heavily proprietary and emulated nature. Because it relies on a mini PlayStation executable engine to generate sound, it is completely unsupported by standard web browsers, mobile phones, or modern media players like VLC. The files cannot be simply decoded; they must be actively emulated, making broad compatibility impossible without specialized software. To listen to these soundtracks on modern devices, you should convert them to standard audio formats like FLAC for lossless preservation, or MP3 and WAV for universal playback. Note that converting to a streamed format will exponentially increase the file size, and infinite loops programmed into the original game sequencer will be cut off at a defined time limit. This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert because it is not a standard audio stream. Often, only the original software or a dedicated PS1 emulator can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your PSF1 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
