About PPSM files

A .PPSM file is a Microsoft PowerPoint Macro-Enabled Show file. It is built on the Office Open XML (OOXML) standard and uses ZIP compression to store slides, images, text, and embedded Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) macros. Unlike standard presentation files, it is designed to open directly in full-screen slideshow mode rather than edit mode. The primary software used to create and execute these files is Microsoft PowerPoint, though alternative suites like LibreOffice Impress can open the slide content with limited macro support.

Users frequently need to convert .PPSM files because they present significant usability and security challenges. The format relies on proprietary VBA code, which is a massive security risk often exploited by bad actors to distribute malware. Furthermore, you cannot safely or fully execute these files on mobile devices or standard web browsers without losing macro functionality. Because the file forces a full-screen presentation upon opening, it heavily restricts immediate editing, causing frustration for users who just want to update a single slide or extract text.

The best target formats for conversion are PPTM (if you need to retain macros but regain edit access), PDF (for universally safe, static document sharing without macro risks), or MP4 (to share the animated presentation as a video file). Be aware that converting to non-macro formats like PDF or standard PPTX will permanently strip out the VBA code, interactive buttons, and custom scripts.

This file format is difficult to convert perfectly because the embedded VBA macros rely heavily on the specific execution engine within desktop versions of Microsoft Office. Standard online converters usually fail to process or translate these proprietary VBA scripts. Because .PPSM is inherently a ZIP archive, our analysis can detect the underlying text and embedded media formats, allowing for secure extraction and viewing even if the macros cannot be safely run.

Convert.Guru analyzes your PPSM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
