About PPSM files
The .PPSM file type is a Microsoft PowerPoint Macro-Enabled Slide Show. Introduced with Office 2007, this format utilizes the Open XML standard (a Zipped container of XML files) but specifically includes a vbaProject.bin part to support Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) macros. Unlike the standard PPTM format, which opens the presentation in an editable window, a .PPSM file is designed to auto-play immediately upon opening, launching directly into a full-screen slide show. This makes it ideal for kiosks or finalised interactive presentations containing scripts.
However, this "auto-play" behavior combined with macro capability is often a source of frustration. First, security protocols in modern operating systems and email servers aggressively block macro-enabled files due to the high risk of embedded malware. Users often face scary "Security Warning" prompts or find the file completely disabled by group policy. Second, editing a .PPSM is counter-intuitive; you cannot simply double-click it to fix a typo, as that triggers the show. You must open PowerPoint first, then navigate to the file.
To bypass these restrictions and usability hurdles, conversion is the pragmatic solution. converting to PPTX (standard presentation) strips the dangerous macros and restores standard editing behavior. For distribution where interactivity isn't needed, converting to PDF ensures the slides are viewable on any device without triggering security alerts. If the presentation relies on animation, converting to MP4 video preserves the visual flow while neutralizing the VBA code.
Convert.Guru analyzes your PPSM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The PPSM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PPSM converter.
