About POOL files

A .pool file is primarily associated with Photogrammetry Reflectance Map data generated by Pix4Dmapper. These files store raw radiometric information calculated from drone or aerial imagery, serving as an intermediate container for generating Index Maps or Thermal Maps.

A major limitation for users is that .pool files are proprietary data structures, not standard raster images. You cannot double-click to view them in Windows Photo Viewer, macOS Preview, or edit them directly in Adobe Photoshop. They are essentially locked "digital negatives" of geospatial reflectance data. Users typically encounter these files when digging through project folders, looking for a viewable map only to find an unreadable data blob.

To make this data usable, the recommended workflow is processing or exporting within the Pix4D environment to standard interchange formats. For geospatial analysis and archiving, convert or export to GeoTIFF (.TIF), which preserves the radiometric data and geolocation. For quick visual previews, presentations, or web use, converting the final output to JPG or PNG is ideal, though this strips the raw temperature or reflectance values needed for scientific analysis. For sharing reports with clients who lack GIS software, generating a PDF report is the standard solution.

Convert.Guru analyzes your POOL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The POOL Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our POOL converter.
