About PKX files

A .PKX file is a decrypted single Pokémon data file extracted from Nintendo 3DS Pokémon games, primarily Generation 6 and 7 titles like X/Y or Sun/Moon. It stores the exact binary data of a single creature, including its species, Individual Values (IVs), Effort Values (EVs), moveset, and Original Trainer (OT) data.

The primary tool used to read, edit, and convert .PKX files is PKHeX, an open-source save editor for 3%A9mon">Pokémon core series games.

The .PKX format is a highly problematic file for average users. It is a strictly proprietary, undocumented binary format that cannot be read by standard operating systems, text editors, or web browsers. If you try to open it in Notepad, you will only see garbled text. Furthermore, the format relies on strict cryptographic checksums. Manually changing a single byte without recalculating this checksum will immediately corrupt the data, causing the game to delete the Pokémon or flag it as illegal during online play.

Users typically need to convert .PKX files into generation-specific formats like .PK6 or .PK7 for safe injection into a specific game's save file, or extract the data to JSON or plain text to share team loadouts online.

Because .PKX is a closed, proprietary format heavily tied to Nintendo's internal game engines, standard online converters fail to process it entirely. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your PKX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted UCX, SAV and EMX files.

The PKX Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PKX converter.
