About PIGG files
A .PIGG file is a proprietary game asset archive originally created by Cryptic Studios for the massively multiplayer online game City of Heroes and its expansions. It acts as a massive data container, packing thousands of internal textures (.texture), 3D models (.geo), sound effects, and configuration scripts into a single large repository. The format relies on standard ZLib compression but uses a custom file header and proprietary directory structure designed exclusively for the game engine.
Players, modders, and game preservationists typically need to convert or extract .PIGG files to access the raw media inside. The major disadvantage of this format is its closed, undocumented architecture. Standard unzipping utilities like 7-Zip or WinRAR cannot read the custom directory headers, leaving the data completely inaccessible without specialized, community-built extraction scripts.
Because .PIGG is an archive container rather than a single media file, you cannot "convert" it directly into a standard image or audio format in one step. Instead, you must first extract the contents. Once extracted, the embedded proprietary assets are converted to standard targets: audio is extracted to OGG, custom texture files to DDS or PNG, and 3D geometry to OBJ.
This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert because the game engine relies on hardcoded offsets and proprietary structures to read the data. Standard online converters fail because they expect generic archive structures like ZIP or RAR. Often, only the original game client or dedicated community tools can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your PIGG file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert PIGG file to EXE, ISO, BIN, CUE, PAK, WAD, PK3, PK4, BSP, MAP, SAV or DAT, you can use City of Heroes or similar software from the "Game Asset Archive" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MOD, BIN, CFG, SCX, DAT, MPQ, LOG, CUE, INI, EXE, SCM or ISO files to PIGG, try City of Heroes or another comparable tool in the "Game Asset Archive" category.
The PIGG Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PIGG converter.
