About OMA files
The .OMA file extension is primarily associated with Sony OpenMG Audio files. These files store audio data using Sony's proprietary ATRAC codecs and are wrapped in OpenMG Digital Rights Management (DRM) to prevent unauthorized copying. Historically, users created these files when ripping CDs using Sony SonicStage or OpenMG Jukebox for playback on MiniDisc and early Network Walkman devices. A secondary use for .OMA files is the Optical Marking Application standard, which stores ophthalmic lens 3D tracing data for manufacturing eyewear. A minor use includes option data files for FANUC CNC industrial machine tools.
The main disadvantage of the Sony .OMA audio format is its strict DRM and complete obsolescence. Modern operating systems, smartphones, and standard media players cannot open or play these files natively. The original Sony software requires outdated versions of Windows, making native playback incredibly frustrating today. Because the files are encrypted and locked to specific hardware or legacy software, users face a significant challenge trying to access their own music libraries.
To rescue your audio library, you must bypass or strip the legacy DRM and convert the files to modern, unprotected formats. For widespread compatibility across all modern devices and web browsers, convert .OMA to MP3 or AAC. For archiving your music without further compression loss, convert to WAV or FLAC. Drop your file here to view and convert it securely right in your browser - free, online, and without installing obsolete software.
