About OMA files
The .OMA extension most frequently identifies Sony OpenMG audio files, a proprietary format introduced by Sony in the early 2000s for its Walkman and VAIO devices. These files contain audio encoded with the ATRAC3 or ATRAC3plus algorithms, wrapped in an OpenMG DRM container. While efficient for the time, the format is now obsolete and problematic; many .oma files are encrypted with Digital Rights Management (DRM) that ties them to the specific computer installation where they were created. This effectively locks users out of their own music libraries if they no longer have access to the original authorized PC and software like SonicStage.
For most users, the goal is recovering this audio by converting it to universal formats like MP3 or WAV. If the file is unencrypted, modern players like VLC media player can play and convert it. However, DRM-protected files often remain inaccessible without the original keys.
A significant secondary use of the .oma extension is in the eyewear industry, where it serves as the Data Communication Standard for ophthalmic lens tracing. Standardized by the Optical Manufacturers Association (now The Vision Council), these ASCII text files contain geometric data (radii and angles) used by lens edging machines to cut eyeglass lenses to fit specific frames. Designers and engineers often need to convert these lens maps into DXF format for use in CAD software like Rhino or AutoCAD.

The OMA Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our OMA converter.
