About NCER files

The .NCER file extension is a proprietary Nitro Cell Resource file developed by Nintendo for the Nintendo DS handheld console. Game developers use it to define "cells", which are collections of 8x8 pixel graphical tiles mapped together to form larger 2D sprites, characters, or user interface elements. It is important to note that .NCER files do not contain actual image data or color palettes; they only store the spatial layout and coordinate mapping. The raw graphical data resides in NCGR files, while colors are stored in NCLR files.

The main disadvantage of the .NCER format is its highly specialized, closed binary structure. It is completely unreadable by standard image viewers, web browsers, or conventional operating systems. You cannot open it natively on a PC or Mac. Accessing or modifying the file requires specialized reverse-engineering tools or ROM hacking software, such as Tinke or CrystalTile2.

Users typically need to convert .NCER files to view the assembled sprite assemblies or edit them for fan translations and ROM modifications. Standard online converters fail to process this format because it relies entirely on external graphic and palette files to make visual sense. To extract the visual data, users usually export the assembled result to PNG. Alternatively, the coordinate mapping data can be extracted to JSON or XML for analysis.

This file format is difficult to open or convert natively. Often only the original Nintendo software or community-built emulator tools can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your NCER file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
