About MPW files
The .MPW file extension represents a convergence of three distinct, often incompatible formats, creating significant confusion for users. The most common modern variant (approx. 30%) is a Midas Project file used by Midas IT engineering software (like Midas Civil or Gen). While these appear proprietary, they are often structured as SQLite databases, meaning users without the expensive Midas software can potentially extract data using generic SQL tools. The second most frequent use is a legacy WordPerfect Executive Spreadsheet, a relic from the DOS era that modern office suites struggle to open. Finally, strictly in the Microsoft Project ecosystem, an .MPW is a Project Workspace file from versions 98-2000.
Critical Constraint: The Microsoft Project .MPW file does not contain your project data (Gantt charts, tasks); it only stores references to the actual MPP files and their screen layout. Converting this file is often futile if the linked .MPP files are missing. For Midas files, the challenge is proprietary schema lock-in, making CSV or XLSX the best target formats for data accessibility. For legacy WordPerfect files, the goal is simply recovering the text or tabular data into Excel or PDF for archiving.
Convert.Guru analyzes your MPW file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The MPW Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MPW converter.
