About MPGINDEX files

The .mpgindex file is an Adobe MPEG Index File generated by Adobe video editing software such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects, and Adobe Media Encoder. It is a system-generated cache file used to speed up the playback, scrubbing, and rendering of MPEG video files. Instead of decoding the entire video stream on the fly, the software reads the .mpgindex file to locate specific frames instantly.

Users often try to convert these files because they mistake them for actual video files. A major disadvantage of the .mpgindex format is that it contains zero media data - no video, no audio. It is completely useless without the original MPG or MPEG file stored in the same directory. Furthermore, these cache files often clutter hard drives and annoyingly litter project folders.

Because this is not a media file, you cannot convert it into standard video targets like MP4, MOV, or AVI. Converting it to a plain TXT file or inspecting it in a hex editor may allow you to view the raw frame offset data, but it will not give you a playable video.

This file format is difficult to open or convert because it is a closed, proprietary data structure designed exclusively for internal use by Adobe rendering engines. Standard online converters fail to process it because they expect video streams that do not exist. If our analysis detects supported underlying text or embedded data, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your MPGINDEX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
