The .MP12 file is a proprietary electronic circuit design project file created by NI Multisim version 12, an Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tool developed by National Instruments. It stores schematic captures, printed circuit board (PCB) layout data, electrical component parameters, and SPICE simulation models.
To natively open and edit this file, you need a commercial license for NI Multisim version 12 or newer. The format presents significant challenges for modern workflows. It is strictly proprietary, meaning it cannot be opened by web browsers, standard document readers, or competing EDA tools like Altium or KiCad. Furthermore, it suffers from version-locking; older versions of Multisim (like v11) cannot open a v12 project, forcing costly software upgrades.
Because of these limitations, users frequently need to convert .MP12 files. The best conversion targets are PDF or PNG for sharing readable schematics with non-engineers, or CIR (SPICE netlist) to migrate the raw simulation data to other platforms. Note that exporting to an image or PDF strips away the active simulation capabilities, leaving only a static visual record.
This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert externally. Standard online converters fail to process it because rendering the schematic requires access to Multisim's closed component libraries and proprietary engine.
