About MONTAGE files

A .montage file is a proprietary screenplay document created by Mariner Software's Montage application for Mac. Screenwriters use it to store scripts, scene metadata, and character profiles.

The main disadvantage of the .montage format is its closed, proprietary nature. You need a specific, paid, and largely legacy Mac application to open it. Files cannot be natively imported into industry-standard software like Final Draft or modern web-based screenwriting tools. If you do not own a Mac with the original software installed, your script data is essentially locked.

To ensure long-term access, you should convert .montage files to PDF for reading, FDX for professional editing, or TXT for basic text recovery. Exporting to plain text will strip away custom formatting and scene breakdown metadata.

This file format is difficult to open or convert using standard online tools because the data structure is undocumented. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded text format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your MONTAGE file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
