About MD_ files

An .md_ file is a compressed version of a Microsoft Access Database (usually MDB), typically created by Microsoft installation tools using LZ77-based compression algorithms. These files are commonly found on older Windows installation media, recovery disks, or within setup packages where disk space was a premium. The primary disadvantage of the .md_ format is that it is strictly a deployment artifact; standard database tools like Microsoft Access or LibreOffice Base cannot open, read, or query the file directly while it remains compressed. Users effectively face a 'locked' database until the file is processed. To access the tables, forms, and data inside, the file must be 'expanded' or converted back to its original MDB format. Once decompressed, the database can be migrated to modern formats like ACCDB for current Access versions, SQL for server imports, or CSV for spreadsheet analysis.

Convert.Guru analyzes your MD_ file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted WS_, LD_ and TB_ files.

The MD_ Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MD_ converter.
