The .LVP file extension is a classic example of a "dual-use" format that causes significant confusion. For most users (approx. 44%), this is a legacy Lucent Voice Player audio file, a proprietary format used by older voicemail systems like the Lucent (now Avaya) Intuity AUDIX. These files contain low-bitrate, highly compressed speech audio that standard media players like VLC or Windows Media Player cannot decode without specific, often obsolete, codecs. The main friction point is portability: you cannot simply email an .LVP voicemail to a colleague or play it on an iPhone. To make these recordings usable, they must be converted to standard MP3 or WAV formats.
However, in the telecommunications infrastructure sector, an .LVP file (approx. 22%) often refers to cable certification test results generated by Fluke Networks LinkWare PC. These files store critical pass/fail data for copper and fiber optic installations. The problem here is data lock-in; the file is a binary container readable only by the LinkWare software suite. Project managers and clients typically do not have this software installed, making the file useless for reporting unless converted. For these users, the goal is converting the .LVP data into a readable PDF certification report or a CSV spreadsheet for analysis.
