The .LUN file extension is primarily used to store database entity-relationship models created by the DB-MAIN CASE (Computer-Aided Software Engineering) tool. It contains logical database schemas, conceptual data models, and architectural diagrams. Secondarily, it is occasionally associated with legacy Lotus Notes database files.
The main disadvantage of the .LUN format is its highly specialized, proprietary nature. Standard web browsers, text editors, and image viewers cannot interpret it. Opening the file requires downloading and installing the specific DB-MAIN software environment. This creates severe collaboration bottlenecks, as non-technical stakeholders or developers using modern tools cannot view the diagrams or schemas without the original software.
To share database designs or deploy structures, users typically need to convert .LUN files into visual formats like PDF, PNG, or SVG for diagram sharing, or export the data definition scripts into SQL or XML.
