Convert LUN to another file type
To convert LUN projects to another format, you need DB-MAIN or other Database software.
Convert a file to LUN
To convert other file formats to the "CASE Project File" file type, you need software like DB-MAIN or a similar tool.
About LUN files
A .lun file is a proprietary project file created by DB-MAIN, a Computer-Aided Software Engineering (CASE) tool developed by the University of Namur. These files act as containers for Entity-Relationship (ER) schemas, logical data models, and reverse-engineering metadata used in database architecture.
Because .lun files are tied strictly to the DB-MAIN environment, they present significant interoperability challenges. You cannot open them in standard text editors, web browsers, or common database management tools like MySQL Workbench or Microsoft SQL Server. This format lock-in makes sharing diagrams with stakeholders or migrating schemas to other tools difficult without conversion.
To make the data usable outside the academic environment, users typically need to convert .lun files based on their end goal:
For Implementation: Convert to SQL (DDL scripts) to generate the actual database structure.
For Documentation: Convert to PDF or PNG so clients and managers can view the ER diagrams without installing specialized software.
For Data Exchange: Convert to XML or XMI to import the model into other modeling tools like Enterprise Architect.
Convert.Guru analyzes your LUN file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert LUN file to TMP, TEMP, CACHE, LOG, BAK, OLD, NEW, PART, DOWNLOAD, CRDOWNLOAD, LOCK or PID, you can use DB-MAIN or similar software from the "Database Entity-Relationship Model" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DEVICE, CACHE, SOCK, SYMLINK, PID, MOUNT, FIFO, LOG, PIPE, TMP, JUNCTION or TEMP files to LUN, try DB-MAIN or another comparable tool in the "Database Entity-Relationship Model" category.
The LUN Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our LUN converter.
