About LINX files

A .LINX file is an iPod Links Folder utilized by classic Apple iPod devices. It functions similarly to a website directory index. Instead of holding actual note content or media, a .LINX file stores a collection of hyperlinks pointing to specific TXT, LINK, or media files on the device. This structure allowed the iPod software to quickly display collections of text-based items without duplicating the original data. You could originally manage these files using Apple iTunes. The primary disadvantage of the .LINX format is that it is a legacy, proprietary index. It is essentially useless without the original files it references. Because it only contains structural tags and file paths, it requires the original iPod ecosystem to function as intended. Users often extract these files from old iPod backups and struggle to read them on modern operating systems. Standard document converters fail to process them because the files do not contain rich text or media. If you need to recover the index data, the best conversion targets are standard TXT or HTML. Converting to these formats allows you to read the raw hyperlink paths and text tags, though you will not recover any external media that the file originally linked to. This file format is difficult to open or convert because only the original iPod software can properly read and execute the contextual navigation links. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible. (Note: .LINX is also rarely used as a text log for Bridge card game software).

Convert.Guru analyzes your LINX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
