About JCEKS files

The .JCEKS file format is a Java Cryptography Extension KeyStore. It stores cryptographic keys, certificates, and passwords used in Java applications. It was introduced to provide stronger encryption, specifically Triple DES, compared to the older JKS format. You can manage these files using the command-line keytool utility provided by Oracle Java or graphical applications like KeyStore Explorer. However, the .JCEKS format is a proprietary, legacy format tied exclusively to the Java ecosystem. It is not easily readable by non-Java systems like OpenSSL, web browsers, or standard text editors. Starting with Java 9, the industry standard PKCS12 format is heavily preferred over JCEKS. Users usually need to convert .JCEKS to P12 or PFX to use their certificates in IIS, Apache, Tomcat, or modern cloud platforms. Another common conversion target is PEM to extract public and private keys into Base64 text. Because .JCEKS is a securely encrypted binary file, standard online converters fail to process it. Only the original software or specialized cryptographic libraries can decrypt and export the data. If our analysis detects an unlocked or supported embedded structure, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your JCEKS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted JKS and P12 files.

The JCEKS Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our JCEKS converter.
