About JAG files
The .JAG file extension serves two distinct technical purposes. First, it is an archive format used by Jagex for early Java-based games like RuneScape to store sprites, 3D models, and audio caches. Second, it acts as a digital ROM dump for the Atari Jaguar 64-bit console. Both implementations are highly proprietary and closed-source. Jagex archives lack standard file headers, making them completely invisible to standard unzipping utilities. Atari ROMs require specialized emulators like Virtual Jaguar to run and cannot natively be opened by standard operating systems. Users often need to extract Jagex cache files into standard media formats like PNG or WAV to view game sprites or listen to music. Atari ROMs are best compressed to ZIP or 7Z for long-term storage. Converting or opening these files is difficult because standard online converters fail to parse their custom binary structures. Often, only the original game engine or a reverse-engineered community cache tool can properly read the exported data. Our engine can inspect the file, attempt to show text or internal hex content, and if our analysis detects a supported embedded media format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your JAG file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The JAG Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our JAG converter.
