About ISMC files

The .ISMC file is a Microsoft IIS Smooth Streaming Client Manifest. It is an XML-based document used by legacy Silverlight web applications to manage adaptive bitrate video streaming. Originally handled by Microsoft IIS Media Services, this file acts as a map. It tells the client's browser which video and audio tracks are available, where to find them, and at what bitrates they can be streamed.

The major disadvantage of the .ISMC format is its reliance on a dead, discontinued technology stack. A common and frustrating problem is that users assume it is a video file. An .ISMC file contains absolutely zero video or audio data. It only holds text instructions. Standard media players and video converters will completely fail to open it because they expect encoded media frames, not raw XML text.

If you need to analyze the streaming instructions, convert the .ISMC to standard XML or TXT. If you are actively migrating a legacy stream to modern HTML5 standards, developers often extract the manifest logic to build an M3U8 (HLS) or MPD (MPEG-DASH) manifest. To get a playable video, you must track down the companion ISMV files and convert those to MP4.

Because this is a proprietary text format trapped in a legacy video ecosystem, it causes constant conversion errors on standard tools.

Convert.Guru analyzes your ISMC file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
