About IPMETA files

The .ipmeta file is an internal metadata container formerly used by the Apple iPhoto application. It primarily stores library organization data, facial recognition coordinates, image tags, and GPS locations linked to a user's photo collection. Because Apple replaced iPhoto with Apple Photos in 2015, this format is now obsolete and heavily tied to older versions of macOS. Users typically encounter .ipmeta files when recovering data from old hard drives or migrating legacy photo libraries. The main disadvantage of this format is its proprietary, undocumented nature. It requires the original iPhoto software to read properly, which is impossible on modern operating systems without a virtual machine. Furthermore, users often mistakenly believe the file contains their actual pictures, but it only holds text-based data about the pictures. Because it lacks standard image data, converting .ipmeta directly to JPG or PNG is impossible. The best conversion targets are XML, JSON, or TXT, which allow you to salvage the human-readable metadata. However, the proprietary internal structure makes this file format extremely difficult to parse accurately. Often, only the original Apple ecosystem can properly interpret the data relationships. Standard online converters fail completely. Our engine can inspect the file, extract embedded text, and show internal content, offering a realistic workaround to access your lost metadata.

Convert.Guru analyzes your IPMETA file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The IPMETA Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IPMETA converter.
