A .inprogress file is a temporary package folder created by macOS Time Machine. It stores system data and user files while an active backup is writing to an external drive. The only software designed to natively interact with this structure is Apple Time Machine. Users typically search for ways to open or convert this file when their backup drive unexpectedly runs out of space or a backup fails. The major disadvantage of the .inprogress format is that it represents unfinished, fragmented data. It is a proprietary, system-locked package that often exceeds 100GB in size. If a backup is interrupted by a network drop or a disconnected cable, the system abandons the file, leaving a massive, unusable chunk of data that cannot be mounted or extracted like a regular archive. Due to the unfinished nature of the data, there are no reliable target formats for conversion. You cannot easily convert a .inprogress package into a standard ZIP, ISO, or DMG file because it lacks a finalized directory tree. This file format is notoriously difficult to open or convert because it is a closed, proprietary directory bound by strict system permissions.
