The .INM file format is a proprietary fax storage format created by the now-defunct Caere Corporation for their FaxMaster software in the 1990s. These files were originally used to archive incoming and outgoing digital fax transmissions on legacy Windows machines. Historically, users interacted with these files using Caere FaxMaster on Windows 3.1 or Windows 95 operating systems.
The primary disadvantage of this format is its extreme obsolescence. The original software is a 16-bit application that cannot run natively on modern 64-bit operating systems. Furthermore, .INM files use proprietary file headers and undocumented wrappers that standard image viewers and web browsers simply cannot interpret. This forces users into a frustrating dead end if they need to access old business records or legal documents.
To preserve the data, users must convert these faxes into modern, standard formats. We recommend converting to PDF for easy document sharing and multi-page viewing, or TIFF and PNG for lossless archival of the monochrome raster data.
