About INLK files

An .INLK file is a temporary system file generated by Adobe InDesign when a document is opened. It acts as a network lock to prevent concurrent modifications by multiple users trying to edit the same file. The file is managed exclusively by Adobe InDesign and Adobe InCopy. Users often encounter .INLK files when a software crash leaves them behind as orphaned files. The main disadvantage of this proprietary format is that an orphaned lock file will permanently prevent you from opening your actual .INDD project file. Many users mistakenly believe these files contain document backups and attempt to convert them. Converting an .INLK file to standard formats like .PDF or .DOCX is impossible because it contains zero layout or graphic data. It only holds byte-level metadata regarding the locked state, user name, and machine ID.
