A .IMOVIEPROJ file is not a playable video; it is a proprietary project package created by Apple iMovie on macOS or iOS. Think of this file as a "recipe" rather than the meal itself - it contains the edit decision list (EDL), timeline data, effects settings, and references to raw media files, but it does not contain the rendered video stream.

Because of this structure, .IMOVIEPROJ files cannot be opened by standard media players like VLC or uploaded to YouTube, and they are completely incompatible with Windows. A common source of friction occurs when users copy this file to another computer only to find it "empty" or broken because the source media clips (referenced by absolute paths) were left behind on the original Mac.

To make the content usable, you must use iMovie to "finalize" or export the project.

For Web & Sharing: Open the project in iMovie and use the Share menu to export as MP4 (H.264). This creates a standalone video file compatible with almost all devices.
For High Quality: Export as MOV (ProRes) for archiving, though file sizes will be significantly larger.
For Raw Recovery: If you cannot open the project, you can sometimes right-click the file on a Mac and select "Show Package Contents" to salvage the original media clips from the internal folders.
