About HAV files
A .hav file is a proprietary video recording format generated primarily by Hisharp digital video recorder (DVR) systems and occasionally by Hanwha Techwin (formerly Samsung) or Hikvision surveillance setups. Unlike standard MP4 or AVI files, HAV files are raw video streams dumped directly from the DVR's hard drive to external storage (like a USB stick) without standard file headers.
Because they are designed for efficient, continuous writing rather than compatibility, Windows Media Player, QuickTime, and even standard settings in VLC Media Player often fail to open them. Users typically encounter these files when reviewing security footage for evidence or archiving. The most reliable workflow is not direct playback, but conversion: using the manufacturer's proprietary DVR Player software to export the footage to a standard format. For viewing on mobile devices, sharing via email, or submitting as legal evidence, converting the HAV container to H.264 MP4 is essential to ensure the video is accessible without requiring specialized software installation.
Convert.Guru analyzes your HAV file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The HAV Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our HAV converter.
