Convert a file to H4
To convert other file formats to the "Hierarchical Data File" file type, you need software like HDFView or a similar tool.
About H4 files
The .H4 file extension represents a Hierarchical Data Format version 4 file. Developed by The HDF Group, this binary data container stores massive volumes of complex, multi-dimensional scientific data. It is widely used in aerospace, physics, and earth sciences to manage datasets that bundle arrays, raster images, and metadata together. You can read more about the format's architecture on Wikipedia. Specialized scientific tools like HDFView or MATLAB are required to open these files.
The .H4 format poses significant challenges for modern data workflows. It relies on an older, rigid software library architecture and lacks the parallel I/O capabilities of its modern successor, H5. You cannot open a .H4 file in standard web browsers or everyday spreadsheet software like Microsoft Excel. The complex binary structure makes it an inaccessible format for average users, often requiring specialized programming knowledge in Python or C++ just to extract basic data points.
To make the data usable, you must convert the .H4 file to more accessible formats. The best target formats include H5 for modern scientific processing, NC (NetCDF) for climate and GIS data, or CSV for flat tabular data. Be aware that converting a multi-dimensional .H4 file to a flat CSV will completely strip away the hierarchical metadata and nested structure.
Because this is a highly specialized binary format, standard online converters usually fail to process it.
Convert.Guru analyzes your H4 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert H4 file to H11 or H1, you can use HDFView or similar software from the "Scientific Data Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert files to H4, try HDFView or another comparable tool in the "Scientific Data Storage" category.
The H4 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our H4 converter.
